What is EA189 (VAG Emission scandal)?
Volkswagen Group announced that technical changes need to be made to the 1.6 and 2.0-litre (EA189 diesel engines) at the center of the ongoing emissions scandal. The recall started in January 2016 and has seen cars/vans fitted with the 1.6-litre TDi EA189 engines fitted with a new ‘flow transformer’ and a software update, and 2.0-litre variants with just a software update alone.
The alterations are designed to bring the engines’ NOx emissions down to acceptable standards while, “Volkswagen Group says”, avoiding major side effects on fuel consumption and performance. BUT this just isn’t the case, thousands of owners have reported the following problems after receiving the EMISSIONS FIX:
- Lower fuel economy
- Major reduction in low down performance
- Rapidly failing EGR valve
- Undesirable drive-ability characteristics
How do I know if my customers car has had the recall?
Volkswagen has released an online checking tool. You can enter your car’s VIN number on VW’s website here to find out if it’s affected.
Cars embroiled in the scandal include the VW Golf Mk6, Passat Mk7 and Tiguan Mk1, along with various Audis including the A1, A3, A4, Q3, Q5 and TT.
There are an often untapped sector of any customers who like to book a company to downgrade their ECU to pre EA189 software but don’t want a remap. In this section I will give you a guide on how to perform a software downgrade / update.
